Sydney Latin American Film Festival’s final film for 2015

Film’s a great way to tap into another culture, right?  It’s entertaining, it’s uplifting, it can be a thought-provoking and sometimes it can just straight-up bum you out.  But whatever you think, you’re always taken to another era, another place, and out of your comfort zone.

The Sydney Latin American Film Festival does all of those things, and for one final night, The Green at the Addison Road Community Centre will be transformed into an open-air cinema with a twist, with the tastes and sounds of Cuba ringing through the air.

Taking place on Friday 27 November, Cine 428 draws inspiration from the Caribbean Island of Cuba to deliver a night that promises Latino film, music and visuals plus mouthwatering traditional food. Set amongst party lights, picnic rugs and bean bags to create a bombastic mood to kick off the weekend.

To close their Birthday celebrations, the Festival will be screening a festival fave. Winner of the 2012 Miami Festival Audience Award, Juan of the Dead (Juan de los Muertos) is a wacky and irreverent comedy packed full of the juiciest zombie satire.

I mean ... what a title :)

I mean … what a title :)

Juan’s a deadbeat – 40 years old and spends his days doing next to nothing. Juan’s only emotional tie is to his daughter, Camila, who wants nothing to do with her loser father. Things look pretty grim for Juan until strange things start to happen across Havana; the people are turning violent, attacking one another without cause. Juan slowly comes to the realisation that the attacks are not an act of the Revolution, and that the attackers are not “normal” human beings. They’re not vampires, they’re not possessed and they’re definitely not dissidents. Juan decides to finally become a bit of a doer.  No Juan (I had to do it) waits for opportunity – you take it!
