Ethica Accessories’ Winter Wine Fest to help women in rural Peru

Ethica Accessories are a not-for-profit organisation endorsed by Fair traders of Australia (FToA), helping marginalised women in Peru the chance to earn a fair income by making products to sell in Australia and paying a fair wage for those products.

The fair trade products they sell include:

  • Alpaca products (jumpers, scarves, mittens etc. – perfect for winter!)
  • Ponchos
  • Bags and purses
  • Babies and Children’s clothing
  • Homewares

Head to their website to get a better look at all the products available.

The Event

On Thursday, 18th June, between 7pm and 9pm, Ethica Accessories will be holding a very warm, very inviting Winter Wine Fest, which will help raise funds for the work they do in Peru.  A range of their products will be on sale during the event, as well as wine tasting opportunities by Tom’s Cellars featuring Flinders Bay Wines.  The Winter Wine Fest will be held at the Ron Dyer Centre (St Mary’s Church), at 42 Ridge Street, North Sydney.

To book your ticket for this worthwhile event, head to http://www.trybooking.com/Booking/BookingEventSummary.aspx?eid=137348.  It’s only $20 and includes complimentary mulled wine (I don’t think I’ve been served mulled wine often in Sydney, let me tell you!) and antipasto.  You’ll be merrily drinking and you’ll get a chance to purchase some Ethica products, which will go towards the workshops that are set up to help women develop their skills and abilities, allowing them to earn a living and open up doors to further opportunities for themselves and their families.  Plus, Flinders Bay Wines will also be on sale at a special price!  Win, win, win!

Giving Back

When I first heard about Ethica Accessories, I was searching for handbags that didn’t scream “designer”, but also didn’t feel like I was buying into the whole cycle of purchasing new items only to be cast aside when something “newer” came on the market.  I’m a big believer in recycling and re-using, and pre-loved goods have also always held a special place in my heart.  I figured, if I had to get anything new by way of accessories, it had to be something decent, and it had to give back to the community. After all, we are such a society of consumers, it’s only fair we give back.

So that’s what attracted me to Ethica Accessories. They’re the fair trade company of Mary MacKillop International, they believe in supporting others so they can support themselves, and, by purchasing one of their products, you’ll own a unique item that you know goes towards something worthwhile. From my time in Peru in previous travels, I can say that the colours and artistry of the products are beautiful and well worth the purchase.

My time in Peru was a blast, partly thanks to new buddies like this llama I met wandering around Machu Picchu. It's a beautiful country and Ethica Accessories does a lot of good there.
